Road and travel battle maps
The road encounter is the oldest one there is, and it lives or dies on what is beside the road rather than the road itself. These are drawn as a strip of travelled ground with everything that flanks it: ditches, embankments, treelines, bridge rails and the rocks somebody is waiting behind.
Running one at the table
A road map should make the party's marching order suddenly matter. That means length rather than width, an obvious approach at each end, and terrain on both flanks that rewards leaving the path. Bridges and passes are the sharpest version: one way across, and a decision about it.
How big to make it
Long and narrow suits this: roughly 40 squares along the road by 20 to 25 across. A bridge or a pass can go tighter, because the constriction is the encounter.
What you can make
Pick one and RPGenie writes the map from it. This is not a library of 14 finished pictures: they are starting points, and the map you get is generated for your table.
